Bowlers wreak havoc as Eastern Cape crush Capitals in SA20

GQEBERHA: Sunrisers Eastern Cape bowlers came out all guns blazing and propelled their side to a crushing nine-wicket victory over Paarl Capitals in the 15th match of the SA20 here on Monday.

Put into bat first, the Capitals were humbled by Ottniel Baartman-led Sunrisers Easter Cape bowling attack which booked them for a paltry total of just 52.

Capitals openers Phil Salt and Will Jacks scripted a rather decent start as they added 25 runs for the first wicket before the former perished on the final delivery of the third over.

His partner Jacks followed his footsteps as he perished on the next delivery, bringing the Capitals down to 25/2 in 3.1 overs.

Salt scored 10 off seven while Jacks scored a run-a-ball 12 and remained the top-scorer for his side.

Their back-to-back dismissals resulted in the Capitals running into an astounding collapse. The side could add 27 runs to their total for the cost of their remaining eight wickets as none of their coming batters could make it into the double figures.

Ottniel Baartman was the pick of the bowlers for Sunrisers Eastern Cape with 4/12, supported by Daniel Worrall, who picked three.

Marco Jansen also chipped in with two wickets while Patrick Kruger made one scalp.

In return, the Eastern Cape comfortably chased down the modest 53-run target for the loss of one wicket and 79 balls to spare.

Skipper Wayne Parnell brought an early success for the Capitals by removing Dawid Malan (1) on the first delivery of his spell with just four runs on the board.

But their hustle shortlived as Tom Abell put together an unbeaten partnership with Jordan Hermann and powered the Eastern Cape to a dominant victory.

Abell scored a brisk 31 off just 22 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and a six while Hermann scored 17-ball 20.

The resounding nine-wicket victory lifted Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the second in the SA20 standings with 15 points in five matches while Pretoria Capitals remained at the top with 18 points in as many matches.
