Will Jacks hits ton as Pretoria Capitals stun Durban Super Giants in SA20

CENTURION: Right-handed opener Will Jacks scored a quickfire century and powered Pretoria Capitals to a 17-run victory over Durban Super Giants in the 10th match of the SA20 here on Thursday.

Capitals’ captain Wayne Parnell’s decision to bat first paid dividends for the team as they racked up a massive total of 204/9 on the board at the back of a quickfire century by Will Jacks.

Jacks, alongside Phil Salt, gave the Capitals a flying start, as the pair added 75 runs for the first wicket inside the powerplay.

Jacks was the core aggressor of the stand but Salt was also lethal as he scored a 13-ball 23 before falling victim to Reece Topley in the sixth over.

Pretoria Capitals then suffered another blow to their flourishing start as they Theunis de Bruyn (2) in the next over which resulted in them slipping to 78/2 in 6.3 overs.

Will Jacks then put together a one-sided partnership with Rilee Rossouw (11) before receiving subtle support at the other end from Colin Ingram.

He stitched a 38-run partnership with Ingram and brought up his dominant century in the process.

Jacks, however, could not stretch his extravagant knock and fell in the 13th over, soon after amassing the milestone.

He remained the top-scorer for the Capitals with 101 off just 42 deliveries, laced up with eight boundaries and nine sixes.

Following his departure, the Capitals began to lose wickets at regular intervals but Ingram kept the scoreboard ticking singlehandedly before perishing in the penultimate over.

He was the other notable run-getter for the Capitals with his 23-ball 43 which featured five boundaries and a six.

Topley was the pick of the bowlers for the Super Giants with his 3/34, followed by Junior Dala, who bagged two wickets.

In return, Durban Super Giants could only manage 187/7 in the allotted 20 overs and thus succumbed to their first defeat of the ongoing edition of the SA20.

The then-leaders lost wickets at regular intervals and none of their batters could play a big knock to pose a threat to the Capitals’ bowlers.

Opening batter Matthew Breetzke remained the top-scorer for the Super Giants with a 24-ball 33 while JJ Smuts (27), Quinton de Kock (25) and skipper Keshav Maharaj (25) were the other notable contributors.

Will Jacks backed his quickfire century with two wickets and was adjudged as the player of the match.

Besides him, Hardus Viljoen and Parnell also picked up two wickets each while James Neesham struck out a batter.
